Short answer: they can be worth it as pocket money, but they are not a wage. If you expect one, you will quit within a week. If you treat them as coffee money for spare minutes between lectures, they can fit.
Disclosure: we run Instuly Pulse, which includes surveys, so we have a stake in this. We have written the guide we would want to read, including the parts that do not flatter any survey site, ours included.
What survey sites actually pay
Most pay a small amount per survey, from pence up to a few pounds. Longer surveys and hard-to-reach audiences pay more. Almost every site sets a minimum before you can cash out, so your first payout takes a while.
The part nobody advertises: screen-outs
A screen-out is when you start a survey, answer a few qualifying questions, and then get told you do not qualify. You usually earn nothing for that time. It is not a glitch. A company that wants gamers aged 18 to 22 will turn everyone else away, and you only find out after you have started.
Work out your real hourly rate
For one week, write down two numbers: total minutes spent, including screen-outs, and total money earned. Divide the money by the hours.
Here is an illustration, not real data. Spend 60 minutes, get screened out three times, complete two surveys at £1.00 each, and you have made £2.00 for the hour. Your numbers will differ, but the log shows you what your time is really worth.
How to make the time count
Complete your profile. Surveys match on it, so a fuller profile means fewer screen-outs.
Answer honestly and consistently. Survey networks run quality checks, and rushed or contradictory answers can get you removed.
Skip the VPN and do not share accounts. Many survey networks flag both.
Use a fixed slot. Fifteen to twenty minutes between lectures beats checking all day.
Read the payout minimum before you start.
How to spot a survey scam
You are asked to pay to join. Legitimate sites are free.
It promises a guaranteed amount per day.
It asks for your bank login or card details just to sign up.
The payout minimum and terms are hard to find.
Reviews mention unpaid balances, even if the sign-up reviews are glowing.
Where surveys fit among other options
Surveys need no skills and no schedule, which is why they pay little. If you have a skill, such as tutoring, design, writing or photography, it usually pays more per hour but takes more effort to land.
Do survey earnings count as income?
Money you earn can count as income, and the £1,000 trading allowance may apply to some side income. Whether it covers survey money depends on your circumstances. Read our guide to tax on side hustle money, and check with HMRC if you are unsure. If you are an international student on a Student visa, check your visa conditions before you earn money.
Where Instuly Pulse fits
Instuly Pulse is free to join for adults aged 18 and over. Surveys come through partners including CPX Research and PureSpectrum, and there are also student deals and skills-based gigs. Most surveys pay between $0.10 and $5. You can cash out to PayPal or your bank once your balance reaches $10.
Balances and withdrawals are in US dollars, and PayPal or your bank may convert the money to pounds at their own rate, so check their fees. The same caveats apply here as everywhere: you will hit screen-outs, and what you earn depends on the survey.

Frequently asked questions
How much do paid surveys pay?
Usually from pence to a few pounds per survey, depending on length and how hard the audience is to reach. Once you count the surveys you do not qualify for, the hourly rate is usually low.
Why do I keep getting screened out?
Each survey looks for specific people, so being screened out is normal on every survey site. Completing your whole profile helps match you to surveys you are more likely to qualify for.
