New Zealand Announces New Graduate Visa Pathways From November 2026
New Zealand is preparing to introduce a new visa pathway for international graduates and to update the rules for the existing Post Study Work Visa. These changes, which take effect on 16 November 2026, are designed to support the growth of international education and ensure graduates can move into roles that match New Zealand’s long‑term skill needs.
Together, the updates aim to attract talented students, strengthen the transition from study to work, and maintain New Zealand’s reputation as a high‑quality destination for learning and career development.
The Short-term Graduate Work Visa
A major part of the reform is the introduction of the Short‑term Graduate Work Visa. This new visa gives eligible graduates six months of open work rights, offering a valuable window to search for employment and, where appropriate, move into an Accredited Employer Work Visa. To qualify, students must have completed a full‑time Level 5-7 qualification in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks.
The qualification cannot be an English language, foundation, or bridging programme, and it must not already make them eligible for a Post Study Work Visa. Applicants must also show they have NZD $5,000 in available funds, meet health requirements, and confirm they have never held a Post Study Work Visa or a Short‑term Graduate Work Visa.
Graduates who studied under the New Zealand Scholarship Programme will need written approval from MFAT or Education New Zealand and must apply within three months of their student visa expiring.
Holders of this visa must work under an employment agreement or contract for services, as business ownership is not permitted. While they cannot support a partner for a work visa or children for a Dependent Child Student Visa, they may still be able to support visitor visas for family members. The visa is strictly one‑time only and cannot be extended. Graduates who wish to continue their studies may do so if they enrol in a bachelor’s degree or a higher‑level qualification that leads to Post Study Work Visa eligibility.
Extension to The Post Study Work Visa
Alongside this, New Zealand is expanding access to the Post Study Work Visa. From 16 November 2026, graduates who complete a Level 7 graduate diploma in New Zealand will be eligible, provided they studied full‑time for the entire duration of the programme, did not use cross‑credits or recognition of prior learning, and hold a bachelor’s degree from New Zealand or overseas. Applicants will need to provide evidence of both qualifications, including an academic transcript. The visa will be issued for the same length of time the graduate spent studying the diploma, up to a maximum of one year. As with the new visa, the Post Study Work Visa can only be granted once.
These changes create three clear pathways for graduate diploma holders:
- Those who also hold a bachelor’s degree will receive an open Post Study Work Visa.
- Those without a bachelor’s degree may still qualify if their graduate diploma appears in Appendix 13 of the Immigration Operational Manual, but they will be required to work in the specific occupation linked to that qualification.
- Those whose graduate diploma is not listed in Appendix 13 and who do not hold a bachelor’s degree will not be eligible for a Post Study Work Visa, but can apply for the six‑month Short‑term Graduate Work Visa instead.
Overall, the new settings are designed to create a more structured and skills‑focused pathway for international graduates. By offering clearer visa options and aligning them more closely with New Zealand’s workforce needs, the government aims to support both student success and long‑term economic growth.
